1. The Centre's "Study of China's Cultural Image in Overseas Think Tanks" was granted as the Major Project sponsored by the National Philosophy and Social Science Foundation

On September 24, 2016, the conference for proposing and launching the "China's Cultural Image in Overseas Think Tanks: Assessment & Prospect", the 2016 Major Project sponsored by the National Philosophy and Social Science Foundation undertaken by the National Centre for Canadian Studies, was held.

The evaluation committee consists of experts from institutions including CPPCC National Committee, Beijing Planning Office of Philosophy and Social Science, Press Office of the People's Government of the Beijing Municipality, Renmin University of China, China Institute of International Studies, Beijing Normal University, and Communication University of China. Mr. Wang Lei, Director of the Office of Philosophy and Social Science, Department of Culture and Science and Technology, Ministry of Culture, Mr. Han Zhen, Secretary of Party Committee of BFSU, Mr. Zhang Jian, Dean of School of English and International Studies, etc. have attended the conference.

As the expert-in-chief of the project, Prof. Liu Chen delivered a presentation to expound on the purpose, main tasks, framework, literature review, schedule and other basic information of the project.

After careful discussion, the panel has come to evaluative opinion and highly regarded the research contents and plan of the project.

Project members from the National Centre of British Studies and Centre of Japanese Studies of BFSU, Peking University, Tsinghua University, China International Publishing Group, Minzu University of China, China University of Geosciences, etc. also attended the conference.

2. Two 2015 Projects sponsored by the Department of International Cooperation and Exchanges, Ministry of Education undertaken by the Centre were successfully concluded

The Centre conducted two 2015 Projects sponsored by the Department of International Cooperation and Exchanges, Ministry of Education, "Canada's Ethno-Religious Policy and Its Handling of Ethnic Conflicts: Some Messages to China" led by Associate Prof. Zhao Dong, and "Opportunities and Challenges of China-Canada Energy Cooperation from the Perspective of North American Energy Revolution" led by Dr. Dong Yi-kun.

The two projects collected, compiled, and made an in-depth analysis of a considerable amount of materials. Both of the research reports delivered have been concluded successfully.

3. Associate Prof. Zhao Dong won 2016 Project sponsored by the Department of International Cooperation and Exchanges, Ministry of Education

In December 2016, the Department of International Cooperation and Exchanges, Ministry of Education announced the list of approved projects in 2016. The project led by Associate Prof. Zhao Dong of the Centre, "The International Anti-Religious Extremism Tactics and China's Countermeasures", was on the list as approved.

The project will study the response, experience, theories and cases of the anti-religious extremism efforts worldwide, so as to put forward some possible strategies for China.

4. Project sponsored by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council undertaken by the Centre was successfully concluded

The project sponsored by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council led by Prof. Liu Chen and Wang Wen-li of the Centre, "A Study on the Inheritance and Communication of Chinese Culture in Overseas Chinese", was delivered.

The project conducts a survey in which ten countries are covered including the US, Canada, Britain, Germany, France, Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, and Iran, gathered multidimensional materials ranging from official documents, academic literatures, to media reports, statistical reports, etc., and conducted a big data analysis.

The project presents a comprehensive overview of the inheritance and communication of Chinese culture in overseas Chinese in the new situation, generalizes our good practices, grasps the overarching problems and puts forward corresponding solutions.

The products of the project are highly regarded by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office.

1. Professor Liu Chen’s final report under the 2012 Ministry of Education’s Program for New Century Excellent Talents was rated excellent.

On June 4th of 2016, the evaluation committee of the Ministry of Education of China reviewed Professor Liu Chen’s final report for the 2012 Ministry of Education’s Program for New Century Excellent Talents. Led by Mr. Hu Zhifeng, Changjiang Distinguished Professor, the review panel listened attentively to Professor Liu Chen’s presentation, and carefully examined her final report.

Professor Liu’s dedication to teaching and research is highly recognised by her students and collogues. She is the founding presidents of BFSU-Harvard Forum, as well as many other seminars and workshops. Professor Liu manages successfully several national projects financed by the National Social Science Foundation of China and so on. By far, Professor Liu authored 2 books, and published 60 plus working papers in the esteemed journals, and the papers were reposted by the most authoritative journals, including Xinhua Digest, and Qiushi and so on. Her research report won the first grade prize granted by the Beijing Municipality in 2015. Also, Professor Liu delivers speeches and presentations at events around the world. Her background in policy analysis, intercultural communication and international political economics has established her as a senior adviser to National Development and Reform Commission, The State Council Overseas Chinese Affair Office, and State Council Information Office and so on. In 2015, Professor Liu was listed on the Program for Beijing Municipality International Communication High-Level Talents.

2. The policy-decision consultation project for Beijing Municipality managed by the National Centre for Canadian Studies received positive comments in its mid-term evaluation.

The goal of this project is to assess Beijing’s international influence, analyze the relevant experiences worldwide, such as the world’s livable cities including Toronto and Vancouver etc. and provide strategies for Beijing Municipality.

The evaluation committee fully recognised the reports, and considered the mid-term results solid and rigorous. The evaluation system and synthetic model which the project constructs to record and test Beijing’s international influence shows innovation both in theory and methodology. The strategies provided are well-planned and operable.

Xu He-jian, Deputy Director of Beijing International Communication Office, articulated, "the National Centre for Canadian Studies has a global outlook; Based on comprehensive first-hand materials and solid data analysis, the outcomes of this project will play an important role in Beijing’s international communication during its 13th Five Year Plan".

3. Professor Liu Chen was selected on the Program for High-level Talents of Beijing Municipality.
