3. Graduate Education

Graduate students of the Centre on exchange programs to top universities in the world

Third-year graduate student Fan Yi-ning supervised by Associate Prof. Zhao Dong of the Centre has come to study in Brown University, which is a member of the Ivy League, with the university's scholarship. His field of research is sociology of religion.

One of the second-year graduate students supervised by Prof. Liu Chen has come to study sociology in the University of Salzburg on an exchange program with the university's scholarship. Founded in 1622, the University of Salzburg is a distinguished university in the heart of Europe with approximately 18,000 students and 2,800 employees.

4. Graduate Awards and Honors

First-year graduate student of the Centre Yang Yu has been awarded the "First Level Academic Scholarship for Graduate Students of BFSU". Among the 159 first-year graduate students in School of English and International Studies in the university, a total of 25 won the First Level Scholarship.

Under the supervision by Prof. Liu Chen, second-year graduate student Chen Ming-xia was awarded the Second Level Prize in the 3rd Forum on Big Data and Social Sciences organized by Tsinghua University in 2016, for her report entitled "The Index of China's Image in Overseas Think Tanks".

5. Exchanges in Teaching

Prof. Liu Chen invited to deliver a lecture on teaching in the Department of German, BFSU

On December 6th, Prof. Liu Chen was invited to deliver a lecture on teaching in the Department of German, BFSU. The report was under the title of "Teaching and Learning mutually reinforcing: Some Thoughts on Addressing the Relations between Teaching and Academic Research". Three issues are highlighted and analyzed by the report: (1) the significance of academic research; (2) how to yield high-level academic achievements; (3) how may teaching and research be connected.

2. Graduate Education

Launching International Student Forum on China-Canada Studies

The first International Student Forum on China-Canada Studies is held on the 28th May. The forum is initiated by the National Centre for Canadian Studies, and co-organized by the Canadian Embassy to China and the School of Foreign Language of Harbin Institute of Technology.

Students from more than 10 universities worldwide, including Beijing Foreign Studies University, China Academy of Social Science, Harbin Institute of Technology, Shangdong University, Nanjing Normal University, South-Western University of Politics and Law, Inner-Mongolia University and University of Toronto attended the forum.

The topics include politics, economics and culture. Professor Zhang Jian, Dean of School of English and International Studies pointed in his opening speech, "Premier Li Keqiang stated that the China-Canada Relation has entered a prime time. So, the students who are interested in this field may take the opportunity to make more contributions". Professor Liu Chen, director of the Centre introduced the National Centre for Canadian Studies and the mission of the forum. She encouraged the participants to promote communication between the people in the two countries and take China-Canada relation to a new level.

The review committee announced the winners of excellent papers including 3 first-grade, 8 two-grade and 9 three-grade papers. Professor Wang Zhanpeng, Deputy Dean of the School of English and International Studies, Professor Sun Wenlin, Deputy Dean of the International Business School, Yin Rui, from the School of English and International Studies chaired the forum. The forum was moderated by Professor Geng Li-ping and Dr. Dong Yi-kun from the Centre.

4. Special Panel for Canadian Studies on the Graduate Forum of the School of English and International Studies, BFSU

On the 10th Graduate Forum of the School of English and International Studies, the National Centre for Canadian Studies held a special panel. Graduate students of the Centre presented their papers from the perspective of politics, economics and culture. Dr. Zhang Xiao-yi moderated the panel.

3. Graduate Students Education

(1) Host of Academic Salon of Area Studies: Graduate students’ perspective on Canadian Studies

The series lectures are hosted by the National Centre for Canadian Studies. Graduate students Zhang Meng, Xuan Liqi, Pan Qiaoling, Li Jing, Chen Ciwei and Shan Zhibin will give reports from the perspectives of China-Canada Relation, the Chinese literature in Canada, Canadian multicultural policies, Canadian literature, Canadian religious policies and Canadian national language policies. Pan Qiaoling, a graduate student of the National Centre for Canadian Studies will moderate the salon. Faculty members and students from School of English and International Studies, School of International Journalism and Communication and the French Department attended the salon.

Experts and teachers shared their comments on the reports in term of the relevance of topics, the structure of the reports, research methods and the conclusions. After the salon, the students have a deeper understanding of their research fields, realized where they lack, and formed a plan-oriented, systematic and innovative conscious in academic researches.
